For those do-it-yourselfer's out there, here are our most
frequently asked troubleshooting questions with their possible solutions,
if you don't find what you're looking for or the suggested solutions don't
work please contact us for help (these solutions are for garage doors
in general and LiftMaster® Automatic Openers, if
you have a different automatic opener please give us a call):
1) My garage door won't open and I don't
have an automatic opener attached to the door:
- It is possible that you have a broken spring. Look at the springs
that are located either on the wall above your garage door opening
OR they may be located by the horizontal tracks (if your
springs are mounted by the horizontal tracks (attached to the
ceiling), you'll have two of them, one located on each side of
the door - so check both of them). If you see any gaps give us
a call for a spring replacement, we recommend your replace both
of your springs at the same time because they are rated for the
same amount of use and if one just broke the other will break
shortly. If you continue to allow your automatic opener to try
to lift your door with a broken spring you will wear out the gears,
and motor, which will lead to more costly repairs or a complete
opener replacement.
2) My garage door won't open and I do have an
automatic opener attached to the door:
- Does your automatic opener have power? Make sure your opener
has power.
If you see any gaps give us

of your springs at the same time because they are rated for the

shortly. If you continue to allow your automatic opener to try
to lift your door with a broken spring you will wear out the gears,
and motor, which will lead to more costly repairs or a complete
opener replacement.
3) My remote doesn't seem to work.
- Try changing the batteries.
- Is a green light flashing on the wall button (which is the button
mounted inside your garage - usually beside the door that leads
into your house)? If so, your vacation switch is currently activated
and you need to deactivate it by pressing the lock button.
- The security codes may have been lost due to a power surge or
power failure. Re-program the remote(s), simply push the "Smart
Button" (usually a square green or red button) located above
the gray antenna wire on the back of the opener, then press the
button on your remote (repeat these steps for each wall button/remote
you need to re-program).
4) My remote only works when I get very close to my garage
door.
- Try changing the batteries.
5) My door doesn't close and the automatic opener light
bulbs flash.
- Check the automatic opener's eye sensors, they are little black
boxes attached to the bottom of each side of your garage door
opening. There is an infrared beam that passes between the two
sensors, if something interrupts this beam, or if one or both
of these sensors are bumped out of alignment the automatic opener
is programmed to open the door but not close the door (opener
light bulbs will flash if you try to close the door as a warning
to you that something is in the door's closing path or the eyes
are out of alignment).
Solution: There should be a light on each
sensor, if only one sensor has a light on check for something
blocking the beam, if the beam's path is clear one or both of
the eye sensors are probably out of alignment. Simply loosen
the wing nut that holds the eye secure and move the sensor back
into alignment (note: the Sending Eye Sensor is always lit even
though it may be out of alignment so check both sensors) when
both eye sensors are properly aligned both lights will be lit,
re-tightened the wing nut.
If this solution doesn't fix the problem or if both sensor's
lights are off, please call for service.
6) My door doesn't close all the way, it goes down part
way and then goes back up and the automatic opener lights flash.
- Check the automatic opener's eye sensors, they are little black
boxes attached to the bottom of both sides of your garage door
opening. There is an infared beam that passes between the two
sensors, if something interrupts this beam, such as a trash can,
bicycle, leaves, spider webs, etc. or if one or both of these
sensors is bumped out of alignment the automatic opener is programed
to open the door and flash its lights as a warning to you that
something is in the door's closing path.
There should be a light on each sensor, if only one sensor
has a light on check for something blocking the beam, if the
beam's path is clear one of the sensor's was probably bumped
out of alignment. Simply loosen the bolt and move the senosr
back into alignment and re-tighted the bolt.
If both sensor's lights are off, please call for service.
7) Automatic opener sounds like it's working but the door
doesn't move.
- The automatic opener may have been disconnected from the door.
Re-connect the trolley.
- The chain could be off the sprocket, call for service.
- The belt could be broken, call for service.
- There may be a broken spring. Look at the springs at the top
of your door, do you see a gap (about 2 inches) between one of
them? If so call for service.
8) Opener light doesn't come on when door opens.
- The light bulb is probably burned out.
- The light bulb socket on the automactic opener may be bad, call
for service.
9) The automatic opener light doesn't go out after the delay
period.
- The work light may have been activated on the wall switch, simply
turn it off.
- The automatic opener eye sensor may be interrupted by someone
or something (every time someone walks through the sensor beam
the light will stay on for 5 minutes).
10) I've lost my remote (or my car was stolen with my remote
inside), how do I secure my home (lock-out old remotes and program
new remotes)?
- Push the "Smart Button" (square green or red button)
on the back of your automatic opener and hold it in for 15 seconds,
this will erase or "lock-out" all of your remotes (including
those you still have and want to continue to use, key-ring remotes,
and wall key pads). Next push the "Smart Button" and
then push and release the button on your remote (repeat this process
- push the "smart button" and then push the button on
your remote - for each remote you want to re-program to work with
your opener. For your wall key pad, push and release the "Smart
Button" then enter in your four digit code on the wall key
pad followed by the "enter" button.
