Garage Doors:
- A finished garage door opening is framed with 2x4 lumber or larger,
the 2x4's should be installed flat against the wall, not to be drywalled
over.
- There should be a 2x6 or larger piece of lumber installed in the center
of the opening header with the grain of the lumber running vertically.
This is to mount the door springs on.
- Garage door opening should be a FINISHED opening the same size as
the door you order. Standard widths for residential garage doors are
8', 9', 16', and 18' (widths of 10', 12', 14', 15' and 17' are also
standard depending upon the model, but may be a "Special Order",
call for details). Standard heights for residential doors are 7' and
8' (other heights are available in 3 inch increments but may be considered
"Special Order"). Special Order doors usually have an increased
delivery time - please call for details.
- When ordering a garage door we need to know the FINISHED size of the
garage door opening (after the opening has been framed with lumber and
after the concrete floor has been poured) - the door should fit perfectly
in the opening, therefore if your opening is 9x7 your door will be 9x7.
- There should be at least 3.5 inches of space along each side of the
door opening for hardware (if you have two garage door openings right
next to each other there should be at least 7 inches of space between
door openings - see worksheet).
- The floor to ceiling height should be 12 inches (13.5 inches if an
opener is added) greater than the height of the garage door. This height
needs to be maintained into the garage as far back as your door is tall
plus 18 inches (3.5 feet if an opener is added). This space should be
clear of any pipes, trusses, beams, shelves, etc., this is where the
garage door will be when in the "open" position.
Automatic Openers:
- The floor to ceiling height should be 13.5 inches greater than the
height of the garage door. This height needs to be maintained into the
garage as far back as your door is tall plus 3.5 feet. This space should
be clear of any pipes, trusses, beams, shelves, etc., this is where
the garage door will be when in the "open" position.
- If the garage is going to be finished (dry-walled, painted) and you
don't want the wiring for the automatic opener to show, please contact
us for an appointment prior to the dry-wall installation and we can
pre-wire for you.
- Ideally an grounded electrical outlet should be installed in the ceiling,
just off center of the garage door opening about a foot, back from the
opening the height of the garage door plus 3.5 feet (if your door is
7 feet high the outlet should be installed 10.5 feet back from the opening
about 1foot off center of the garage door opening) this is where the
automatic opener will be plugged in. If no outlet is available your
opener will have to be plugged in using a grounded extension cord. In
either case we highly recommend you plug your automatic opener into
a surge protector to guard against lightning strikes and power surges
(we see several cases each spring and summer where the electronic boards
inside the openers have been completely fried).
